Primary School Grants
2008 MAC Grants totaled over $4,000
Social Decision Making/School Culture
In order to promote healthy choices and positive decision making, personal responsibility, self-worth, honesty and compassion, monthly character education themes are stressed. Teachers incorporate these themes into their curriculum, through direct instruction throughout the month and in conjunction with the Social Decision Making Program. By increasing the studentsí self-esteem, promoting appreciation for diversity, improving communication skills, and preventing escalation of disciplinary problems, students are taught to react positively to each other. In 2008, MAC paid $2,000 for Faculty and Staff to attend a summer institute in Character Education Smart & Good Schools: Helping students do their best work and also the right thing. Attendees will share their experiences with all primary school staff.
The Principals are researching the best use for the remaining $1,400. Once decided upon, the information will be posted.
All Schools: Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon is a drug and alcohol awareness program held each year in October.† Town-wide activities throughout the week involve schools, Borough Hall, the community, businesses and senior citizens.† Each day during Red Ribbon Week will involve a different, very visible activity to highlight the alcohol, tobacco and other drug-free message.† MAC provides funds for the purchase of materials distributed to students throughout the week.† In 2008, MAC has allocated $1,500 for the Red Ribbon Week programs at the High School, Middle School, Ridgewood, Linden and Forest Avenue Schools.
